The KitchenAid KSM150PSER Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer is easily one of the top mixers around. Sold in a shiny, eye-catching red, it's powerful, fairly priced, and can mix anything from dough to egg whites to anything your kids manage to throw in there. It even has an overly exotic name -- "Artisan" -- to give users the impression that they are not only mixing, but are mixing as Raphael or Da Vinci might have mixed.
Using a powerful 325-watt motor, the Artisan easily creams butter, kneads dough, and whips cream. It comes with three attachments -- a flat beater (for making meat loaf, batter, and anything else you'd need a flat beater for), a wire whip (egg wipes, mayo, and stuff that tends to be fluffy), and a hook (for mixing and kneading yeast dough’s.) The hook is probably the most useful attachment, as kneading dough is about as fun as a brain aneurysm, the mixer does it fast and saves you tons of time and effort.
The Artisan includes a pouring shield -- to make sure what you just made ends up wherever you want it to end up, and not all over the floor, the counter, or, in the worst circumstances -- your feet.
The only possible problem that we've noted is that it's a bit big (at 15 inches), a bit heavy (22 pounds), and may take up a bit more room than you intended. It also costs roughly $240 dollars, which is a fairly significant dent in ones wallet.
It is, however, one of the best mixers you'll find on the market. It makes a great gift – and it’s easily one of the best appliances to have in your kitchen.
